I came across a case of Shasta Soda the other day at Sam’s. I stopped, looked, thought about it, then started to push my basket past the display. For a brief moment I was taken back to a season of summers when I was young. I moved on, for just a few feet, then I backed up and grabbed the case of sodas and quickly put them in the basket, before I could change my mind. I wanted these – if only once – just for old time’s sake.

The time would have been in the late 70’s and I had the clothes and the hair to prove it!

I remember that sunny-day-feeling and excitement over getting ready to go to the lake. There were floats to lay on, tubes to sit in, and coolers full of drinks, snacks, and sandwiches. Even the thought of a new beach towel was exciting back then.

I remember piling into my dad’s pickup truck and heading down the back country roads to Mathis Lake. The bottom was a muddy mess, but we didn’t care. We swam in it like it was the cleanest water ever. Those were really good times.

Those thoughts take me back to other summer times – like sitting on the back porch, making homemade ice cream – the old fashioned way.

Even now – there is a certain feel to a summer day – that reminds me of the days and evenings at my dad’s house. Spitting watermelon seeds, swimming and just being a family. Memories of playing Hi-Ho-Cherry-O on the floor, while watching Carol Burnett or The Love Boat on Saturday nights.

I love those memories.

So thanks SHASTA for taking me back – even for a short while.

Maybe Collin will remember the summer that I actually brought home a case of Shasta. He opened a can yesterday, took a sip, and the look on his face was priceless as he said “Yum! That’s the best taste ever!”

Yes, son, it sure is.
