Southeast Texas Youth Lent Idea #3: Labyrinth
Hopefully by now, your Southeast Texas youth group has found at least one idea from this special series you can use during your Southeast Texas Lent observation.
If not, we’ll keep going!
So far, all the excercises we’ve suggested (Fasting in Part 1 & Prayer and Bible Verse Reading in Part 2) were things you could do with little preparation or props – after all, when you’re kicking off a series it is nice to not have to make elaborate preparations for the first couple of lessons.
We’re to Part 3 of our Southeast Texas Youth Lent ideas, and today’s will require at least some phone calls and e-mails and potentially quite a bit of actual preparation.
Today’s Lent Excercise Idea is “Labyrinth”.
Essentially Christians use a labryrinth to walk rhythmically and with turns to put their mind in a similar state to when you are almost asleep. It has been scientifically shown to help Christians reach that state – similar to getting a deep tissue massage in a room with soothing music.
Just so we’re on the same page, in this context a labyrinth is not a maze- it has one way in and out with no tricks. The point is to walk and turn rhythmically.
Your brain activity will slow and your blood pressure will lower.
By the time your Southeast Texas youth reach the middle they should be spiritually and physiologically relaxed and focused. For many, it may be the first time they’ve allowed themselves to slow that much – and it can really open them to a spiritual message or awakening.
Our Southeast Texas church youth are encouraged to “finish first” in everything they do – school, sports, even Bible study. It can be a challenge for some of them to let themselves slow down for the exercise – but it will definitely be worth it!
Encourage them not to rush through the labyrinth and to go much more slowly than they do in their busy every day life.
Try to plan a time for your youth to walk a labyrinth.
Step one – find a labyrinth.

Typically you can find labyrinths in churches that are more liturgical (Catholic, Episcopal, Anglican, etc.).
Ask around your Southeast Texas Christian Community network and you should be able to find one close to where you are.
If not you can always Google search a labyrinth design and make your own.

Does your Southeast Texas church have a labyrinth that you’d like to make available to other Southeast Texas Church youth groups?
That’s one of the wonderful things about the Southeast Texas church community – the willingness to share facilities and resources.
If you’d like to share your Southeast Texas labyrinth with other SETX Churches, EM the information to SETXChurchGuide@gmail.com.
