Lent in Southeast Texas
Ideas for Beaumont and SETX church youth groups.
A few days ago we published Part 1 of our Lent ideas for Southeast Texas youth ministries.
The subject of Part 1 was fasting – from food or from other items of importance to our Southeast Texas church youth – television, video games, shopping – anything that will help bring them closer to The Lord.
Today’s SETX Lent subject for youth is on reading scriptures and prayer.
Southeast Texas parents have huge expectations on our SETX youth when it comes to school work and commitment to athletics, cheer leading, and dance.
When it comes to the Bible and prayer most parents, even the pillars our our Southeast Texas church community, expect that their Southeast Texas youth director has these areas covered.
And of course, Southeast Texas youth directors do have these areas covered- as much as is humanly possible.
As with anything with youth, the more that comes from the parents, the more that will stick.
This note is for our Southeast Texas parents– your youth directors do their absolute best, but it really helps our youth if they get some strong encouragement from home- praying at meals, reading a Bible verse together before bed time, listing what you are thankful for on your way to a family vacation or shopping trip.
Of course, long-term it is in everyone’s best interest for the youth to develop their own habits regarding prayer and scripture reading.
Encourage your youth to take time to pray and read Scripture without the pressure of planning a formal Bible Study or writing a lesson.
Have your SETX church youth give themselves permission to re-read verses – like anything they read, the more times they read it the more they will truly understand what they are reading.
Have your Southeast Texas youth spend time with just a few Bible verses and read them over and over. Each time emphasize a different word or phrase.
Encourage your youth to pray in between each reading and ask God’s Spirit to speak to them in a new and powerful way.
Teach students this exercise – at home and in our Southeast Texas churches.
Consider giving them 10-15 minutes before every Bible study to meditate on the text for the night.
At home, parents, consider giving your child 10-15 minutes to pray and meditate before lights out. They’ll be amazed at how clearing the clutter of the day in prayer and meditation prepares them for a night of quality sleep.
Thank-you for letting us share Part 2 of our Southeast Texas Lent ideas with you.
